ABOUT
THE COMMITTEE
The prom committee is one of the numerous committees’
that is found under the student council or student leaders group. This
committee is generally composed of a bunch of 11th and 12th
graders with a few 9th and 10th graders as well. This
committee is in charge of organizing the prom. The most active members are the
11th graders and the 12th graders. The committee has to
not only plan the prom but also fundraise in order to have money to pay for all
expenses starting from – venue, decoration, catering, music, etc. I have been
active in the prom committee since the start of grade 11; I have helped plan
one prom and am currently in the process of planning my classes prom with the
help of the other members.
MY
ROLE IN THE COMMITTEE
The role in the committee is the treasurer.
Therefore what I am in charge of is to keep track of the money, deposit it into
the bank account and constantly check how much we have. Also, I’m in charge of
all factors having to do with the actual prom. Starting from arranging the
venue, getting an event planner to help with decoration, organizing the
catering, finding the DJ and etc.
OUTCOMES
1. Increased
awareness of your strengths and areas for growth – Through this experience I learnt what were my strengths and
what were areas I required to work on to grow as a whole. For example I learnt
that my communication skills were good but needed to improve. At times I would
expect my colleagues in the committee to think the same thing as me and look as
at a situation through my own eyes without clearly communicating to them what I
was thinking and what was my view. A strength in my communication though was
being able to successfully communicate with the event planner. An area of
weakness that required work was balancing out all the work I had to do.
Balancing school work with prom committee along with everything else I had
going on was challenging and an area that was making it hard for me to be
successful at first however, after some time I got the hang of the situation
and how to balance things in order to not have anything left behind.
2. Undertaking
new challenges – Joining the prom
committee was challenging in two aspects. When I first joined in grade 11 it
was the first time I had signed up to part take in a school committee. At first
it was slightly challenging, as I did not know what to expect. In the beginning
of 11th grade when the prom committee had just been put together, it
was all slightly disorganized which was also challenging as it was not clear
what was expected of me and the other members. The second way the prom
committee was challenging was when I became the treasurer and one of the heads
of the committee now at the start of my senior year. I had never planned an
event before and since I’m in charge of the actual event there was a lot on my
plate. By this being the first event I have ever planned the process is being
slow and with a couple difficult encounters. Another new challenge for me that
came from this experience is learning how to balance the committee with school
work. The committee can be a handful during certain periods because a lot has
to get done and occasionally deadlines for the prom committee clash with school
deadlines and therefore that was a third new hurdle I learnt how to deal with
due to this involvement.
3. Working
collaboratively with others – Although
the committee has three main people in charge it is a committee where we all
need to work together and cooperate and have team spirit. In order to put together
a successful event we needed to learn how to incorporate everyone’s ideas, how
to deal with everyone’s different opinion and perspectives on situations. At
first it was a challenging task given that its many different type of people
trying to put together one event and everyone wanted to have it ‘their own
way’. However with time we learnt how to work together in a positive manner
instead of constantly clashing.
4. Show
perseverance and commitment – During
both years of being a member in the prom committee there has been a lot of
commitment involved. Not only commitment of being a member but being committed
to my role in the group and sticking to the plans and deadlines we have all
set. At times being committed was hard as there were stressful periods in the
Diploma program, however with a lot of perseverance all plans followed through.
5. Develop new
skills – Since planning an event was
something new to me I developed numerous of skills. One of the many skills I
obtained through this experience was how to delegate tasks. Since there were
many members and limited time to do certain things, we gave each person a
responsibility. At first I thought this was easy however through the experience
I learnt that its harder than it seems. Before assigning a person to a specific
task one needs to take in consideration the given persons strengths and
weaknesses to see whether they will be able to accomplish the task in a
successful manner or not. Another skill learnt was how to work on a project
with people I do not know very well. As I am in charge of decoration and etc I
worked with the event planner a lot and that was something new to me.
6. Planned and initiated activities – One of the major
roles of the prom committee is fundraising money in order to plan a successful
prom. Every single member of the prom committee planned activities. Many bake
sales were held, activities at school events such as the Mayfair, October fest,
Welcome back barbecue. The prom committee also planned events such as a fashion
show and roses sale for Valentines Day. All these activities were planned and
initiated activities on behalf of the prom committee.
